Description
Unfinished pillow sham or sham remnant of white linen with trapunto quilt work design. Backed with coarse linen (possibly an old towel; material has a fringe at one end), Center of sham has a cluster of flowers in trapunto work, tied with a ribbon; in an arching garland underneath are bouquets of flowers, leaves, and vine, with a bow in the center. May also be an incomplete demi-lune table cover.
Provenance
Accompanied by note reading "Worked by one of the Brainerd family, connected with the Deming family, in 1805. Given by Miss Clarissa Deming." Possibly worked by Sarah Brainerd Lewis (d. 1818), daughter of Stephen and Susannah (Gates) Brainerd, and widow of Judah Lewis. Later married Col. Henry Champion, Jr., in 1791. Clarissa Champion Deming is a direct descendant of Col. Henry Champion, Jr.
