Description
Quilt remnant. Plain linen backed quilt corner, two edges bound in top fabric, two edges cut. Blue block (?) print textile of linen on top with fancy tree and three partridges (or quail) at base repeated in columns (repeat approximately 12x12"). Face fabric is roller printed cotton chintz with 3 game birds under tree on blue ground, printed in yellow and blue. The yellow has been washed or faded out of this piece. Two edges are self bound. Backing is bleached linen quilted in herringbone pattern with thin layer of cotton batting. Black background, printed chintz of 3 Grouse in floral ground with tree above – repeat 24x24.
Provenance
There was a card attached stating “Piece of the quilt underneath which George Washington slept while a guest of Capt. Wadsworth of Danbury.” There was a card attached stating “Piece of the quilt underneath which George Washington slept while a guest. Found in an old trunk in the Harriet Wadsworth Kilbourne House on North Street, Litchfield. Object originally framed and hung in Lafayette room of Reeve House.
