Description
Small hand made red leather shoe with a blue ribbon trim. Shoe is filled with eleven small handmade and painted fabric figures constructed from a thick, stiff fabric depicting the old woman who lived in a shoe. Figures are all dressed in hand-stitched fabric costumes and secured to the shoe and each other with thread to create one unit. Inside of shoe is stuffed with un-dyed wool.
Comment
This piece of artwork was made by Betsey Brace, wife of Abel Brace (a nephew of Sarah Pierce and brother of John Pierce Brace). The piece of artwork passed from Betsey down through her family. Family tradition reports that Betsey attended the Litchfield Female Academy and this piece may have been made in Litchfield, CT.
