Description
Money or deposit bag used by the First National Bank of Litchfield. Rectangular bag made of cotton canvas, sewn together along two sides. Metal eyelets along top with drawstring closure of yellow cord; metal ball attached to cord at one end of closure, cord knotted at other end. Printed in black ink on one side, "THE FIRST/NATIONAL BANK/OF LITCHFIELD/BRANCHES AT/WASHINGTON DEPOT/& MARBLEDALE." FDIC member seal below, with illegible manufacturer's information in small print at the bottom.
Provenance
First National began in 1814 as the Phoenix Bank, a Litchfield branch of the larger Hartford-based bank, with a Federal style building built on North Street in 1816. The branch was reorganized as the First National Bank of Litchfield in 1864, and merged with Union Savings Bank in 2010.

Note on date range: In 1980, the FDIC raised deposit insurance to $100,000. It was raised to $250,000 in 2008. This bag states an amount of $110,000.
