Object Name
Desk and Bookcase
Object Number
2000-20-2
Description
Large desk and bookcase in two parts. According to both appraisals in the file, the top is an earlier piece than the bottom, though it is unclear when the two pieces were married. The lower desk section is in a late federal style. The front has two slender drawers above the drop front. They are veneered in mahogany. The front is flanked by deeply carved and stacked pineapple, sunflower, and acanthus motifs. The columns end in a simple ring-shaped plinth. The front feet are carved scrolled acanthus flourishes secured by interior screws to the frame. Above the carved columns are veneered panels in the shape of a gothic window. The upper section is earlier with glazed geometric mullions in the Georgian manner.
Provenance
Donor's records indicate the desk and bookcase belonged to Frederick Wolcott (1767-1837), and descended in his family. A "desk and book case" appears in the inventory of Wolcott's estate completed after his death.
